What the Bible Says About Spiritual Gifts

Paul’s foundational description of spiritual gifts can be found in 1 Corinthians 12:4–11. These passages provide helpful truths to guide our understanding:

  • Each believer is given at least one gift.
    (1 Corinthians 12:7)
  • The Holy Spirit determines who receives which gifts.
    (1 Corinthians 12:11)
  • Every gift is valuable within the body of Christ.
    (1 Corinthians 12:21–26)
  • We are to use our gifts to serve others and strengthen the church.
    (Romans 12:6–8; Ephesians 4:12)
  • Believers are commanded to use their gifts faithfully.
    (1 Peter 4:10)
  • Exercising our gifts helps cultivate spiritual maturity.
    (Ephesians 4:13)

Pray for Revelation

God reveals spiritual gifts through the work of His Holy Spirit. Believers should pray for wisdom and study what Scripture teaches about spiritual gifts. God also often uses other believers to help affirm how He has gifted us. At times, spiritual gift assessment tools may also help identify areas of gifting and service.

Match Gifts with Ministry Opportunities

Once gifts are discovered, the next step is to put them into practice. Serving within the church is one of the primary ways God develops and strengthens His people. Consider how your interests, abilities, and spiritual gifts may connect with ministry opportunities where you can serve others faithfully.

Spiritual Growth

Your spiritual journey as a follower of Christ began the moment you acknowledged your sin and placed your trust in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. From that point forward, until death or Christ’s return, God calls every believer to grow in Christlikeness.

Scripture encourages believers to examine their lives as part of spiritual growth and maturity.

The assessment is designed to help you thoughtfully evaluate your spiritual development in six key disciplines:

  • Abiding in Christ
  • Living in the Word
  • Praying in faith
  • Fellowshipping with believers
  • Witnessing to the world
  • Ministering to others
