As a student of history and military conflict and battles throughout time, there are two things that stand out to me that are required for victory:
KNOWING THE ENEMY – Throughout history, identifying and knowing the enemy was key to winning a battle. Often the enemy could be identified by external appearances such as a different color of style of uniform. But as time progressed, it became more and more difficult to identify the enemy because those clear indicators were disguised as a means of trickery and deception.
KNOWING THE ENEMY’S STRATEGY AND TACTICS – When America was involved in World War II, the methods used to fight on the continent of Europe were completely different from those used to fight on the islands and seas of the South Pacific. Our military had to adjust both their techniques and tools to the enemy they were fighting.
Today, whether we realize it our not, WE are in a tremendous battle every single day. While we know who the enemy is – Satan – he always disguises himself with trickery and deception, so we don’t recognize him right away, if at all. This was true with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and it is true of you and I today in America in 2018. And Satan disguises himself and adjusts his tactics for each of us individually to specifically target our unique areas of weakness and vulnerability. What works on the chink in my armor may not work on yours and vice versa. Satan knows our individual weaknesses.
The Apostle Paul knew this and tells us about who the enemy is and how to prepare to battle him in Ephesians 6:10-14. He knew that our enemy is “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44) and Paul tells us how to arm ourselves for battle. Peter also knew this and told us to “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8).
In our Men’s Ministry this spring, (starting Wednesday, Feb 7th) we will be doing an 8-week study from Ephesians 6 called “VICTORY IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE: A FIELD GUIDE FOR BATTLE”. I know I have many weaknesses and flaws. Satan knows this too. As a believer in Jesus Christ and as one who is so grateful for His love and grace and mercy, I personally need to prepare for battle every single day to stay strong in Him who has already won the victory! And I do not like being lied to, tricked, deceived and devoured by the enemy!! Praise be to God for giving us a battle plan in his Word!
Men – join with me and other men for this exciting time together as we sharpen one another for the battle!
