How to Eat an Elephant

Tami JonesChurch News

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” This is a saying you have probably heard and may have used when facing a daunting task. But when you share that task with a large caring family who stands beside you with knife and fork in hand, the task becomes much more doable and fun.

This is what we, the Women’s Ministry Team, have experienced the last several weeks at IBC. As we prayed and planned for the Jen Wilkin Women’s Conference, and we saw the numbers grow “above and beyond all we could think or ask”, we also saw our Immanuel family step up to the “plate”, pick up their knife and fork, and dig in to help. We certainly want to take this opportunity to say a Big Heartfelt Thanks to all who helped and prayed for this event.

The volunteers were many and came from every generation. Several homeschool moms and kids came in and scrubbed and set tables for Saturday’s lunch. The youth and their leaders cleaned and polished the sanctuary on Wednesday night. Many hands came in on church workday to help outside with trimming, mulching, planting flowers, and giving the outside a good bath. Nick Pugh was cutting grass every time we were there and Paul Dreiling was up a ladder, inside or out, doing whatever no one else could reach. Frank Mullican and the youth scrubbed and set up tables for lunch in every room possible in the church. Mike Bowles and his security team made us all feel secure coming and going from 450 cars in lots on both sides of Monument Avenue, along with a few going the wrong direction on Thompson Street. A team of men transformed the fellowship hall after registration into our lunch area, freeing up the ladies to attend the Friday evening session. Volunteers from Men’s Ministry served throughout the day on Saturday. They emptied trash cans, hauled 1400 water bottles, and served 511 lunches and made 750 cups of coffee in a new record time of 14 minutes. Then they stayed over to help Frank reset the facility for Sunday morning. Thanks all for going above and beyond the call of duty.

A talented decorating team of ladies transformed the halls and bathrooms. Others helped put name tags together for check in. Office staff members answered phone calls and answered questions and received mail registrations. Sara Bunn, our social media pro, kept everyone up to date and she and Gary Chaulklin made our first online registration a huge success. Candi Bowles and the Bowles team transformed the Mizpah room into a yummy Popcorn Bar. Friday evening the ladies enjoyed a delicious snack and time of connection.

Our excellent sound team was made up of Megan Clark, Kayla Cummings, and Jon Peterson, who ran sound, recorded, video taped, viewed, converted, and ran the PowerPoint. Without them we wouldn’t have seen or heard anything well. Kelly Ober and the registration team got everyone in, and the greeters made everyone feel welcomed and kept us all moving in the right direction. Then Sara Feiler and the music and worship team got everything off to a good start with beautiful worship together.

So now this elephant has been eaten and the “kitchen” is clean. You have certainly all been an example of the blessing of being part of a “family”, of coming alongside and working together, and of work done heartily for the glory of God. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your cheerful attitudes and servant hearts did not go unnoticed. Many ladies commented on the smoothness of the day, all that was done behind the scenes, and the helpful people available at every turn. It would have been impossible without your help and not nearly as much fun. We are so grateful for each of you. May God richly bless you. Now let’s wash our knives and forks and put them away clean in anticipation of our next meal, another opportunity to “feast” together.

New Members Class

If you have been worshipping with us, and you would like to learn more about our church, or if you think you might be interested in becoming a member, we invite you to attend our upcoming new member class, Sunday, April 30th after the morning worship service. Lunch is provided so please reserve a spot by registering here.

Participation in the class does not commit you to church membership, but it is an opportunity for you to find out more about the life and ministry of our church and to give prayerful consideration to whether you want to enter into membership. Childcare can be provided if that would make it possible for you to attend.
